ropy tendrils of smokerise
snake up from the firepit
chalk stripes of white
on the face of the night
abeyed moments
when shadow-shapes
form in the wisps
living long enough
just to make eye-contact
marking me
mocking me
lifting ethereal hands
holding open my secrets
above burning reach
of the flames
starkly cast in their light
like unwelcome cyphers
revealing dimensions
of me in my shame
This is a brilliant poem. So well described, each word you write has a power and force of its own, and, together, these words form a poem that sent chills down my spine.
In a good way.

Every shadow leaves us with a tiny secret. Important or not, it hides something behind it…
Beautifully written. But you always do that.

You generally do, and I try to restrain the gushing–it’s so sophomoric…

Revealing indeed, a great study of the element with much dimension and allusion. Well done.

A master of the craft of painting with words – sometimes you render even the content as almost incidental. What a great poem.

The details and description in this are haunting. ‘Ropy tenrils of smokerise’ and chalk stripes of white… Your brain is beautiful.

we have a fire pit….finally. i will think of these words tonight when we light it, and watched the shadow shapes form in the wisps.
