a mere humble
rain barrel
softened
and grayed
by runoff
of time
it’s important
it suits me
standing
for something
I so admire
where I can
no longer
stand for myself

I love the image of an admirable rain barrel that stands for something! We need more rain barrels in our lives.

I love the vintage look. Too bad people don’t wear so well. Or maybe we do but don’t appreciate it.

Sadly beautiful. So true that we all want to be of use (have you read The Cider House Rules?).

I think so – John Irving? – orphans in Maine?

Yep–the theme of “being of use” in Irving’s story has stayed with me for decades; I hadn’t realized it was a primary need of mine.

Love this poem. I can see why it brought to mind The Cider House Rules. Great book and a good movie too. I’m off now to read some more of your work.
