gothic castles mount
picturesque outcrops
ruined jewels adorn valleys
where prized heirloom grape
fruits a rich blend of cultures
French German and Swiss
a bittersweet confluence
steeped in the conflicts
of armies and nations
since Rome lost its outpost
to Alemann tribes
but for now it’s a calm place
with placid agrarian splendors
tranquility playing to hearts
of proud natives and granting
esthetic affinities tourists
of natural grandeur derive
from lush forested montane
perceived in this flourishing
post-modern era as worthy
of resting the soul
between wars
Beautiful scene–in words, and painting.

Lovely poem. I have fond memories of Alsace (Srasbourg). I studied there, and learned much about the French/German history . It’s beautiful.

My husband and I hope to visit France and Germany, one day. I am partial to watercolor painting, too. My early children’s books were all illustrated in that medium. So nice not to have computerized art back then! 🙂

I hope you get to visit soon! Beautiful countries, especially France. I love art and paintings. I can’t draw or paint, but am quite visual, so I try to sketch images with my words 🙂

Brilliant! as a one time history student who still loves the subject, you’ve just captured for me, beautifully, the fate of these lovely places that were scenes and subjects of of war and reparations!.
Glad to know that Alsace and Lorraine are peaceful now, with their beauty regained.
