  1. When I spotted the title I flinched a little as any old lefty would – yet as to the points you have made I pretty much agree with them all save that the debates should maybe be on the radio as far too many people judge a candidate by what they look like. For example Clement Atlee who presided over the establishment of our NHS wouldn’t have stood a chance of getting in these days given his odd looks! Fascinating post where left and right can agree how democracy could be better served!

  2. Couldn’t have said it better, or as well for that matter. I would also like to throw in term limits and opening up primary voting to independents. In Maine we cannot vote in the primary, yet a full one third of the registered voters are independent, as am I. So we only get to choose between the two candidates the other two thirds said be can vote for.

  3. I thought it was well said! I am with oldmainer on the term limits thing. It used to be called public service but somehow it has become a career option for people thinking the public lives to serve them.

  4. We need to change the rules to allow multiple parties to flourish. The two party system is a dead system and needs to be changed. I have a set of intermediate steps which I will try to post one of these days!

  5. “Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There was never a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” ~ John Adams

    • my most revered of the founders, that quote illustrated his belief that all the power lies with individuals; that no system of government can withstand widespread ethical failures of individual men – he also said “To believe all men honest is folly. To believe none is something worse.”

  6. I totally agree! I would add that there is no space any more for partisan politics either. I know, controversial but each person should stand on their own merit not affiliated with a party where assumptions are made and the opportunity for corruption is rank! Very thought provoking piece!

  7. Well said. Are you politically and fiscally conservative, but socially progressive? I hate labels, but I am curious how you see yourself.
