who is the fool
convinced of his
righteousness
snipes at flawed
heroes tears down
better men who
serve dutifully
wanting no
fortune or fame
easy targets for
self-serving scorn
pushed through
megaphones
filling the air
with big lies that
incite little
gullible minds
restive crowds
gather agitate
populist protest
unbalancing
scales that weigh
measures of
civic and civil
demeanors till
hucksters cheat
one or the other
with lay of a
dishonest thumb
Look up and observe!

Wonderful. As I read it I thought of the current race for the presidential nomination, but as I read the other comments, it popped into my mind (maybe subconsciously the painting’s title surfacing) that we can play the confidence game with ourselves. God knows, I have. “restive crowds / gather agitate” sums up so much of my mental life unfortunately.
