I watched this happen from the university where I was teaching at the time, sitting outside on the eastern steps of the humanities building with everyone else, all excited about watching yet another shuttle take off. We didn’t know what had happened at first. I remember saying, “oh, they’ve never done that before” as the vapor trails split apart. Then some one with a radio two floors up yelled what had happened. It was one of the most devastating experiences of my life.
