oh for the days
of castle and moat
of knights errant
blue-steeled
in their armor
with values drawn
down from a code
ideal customs of
courage and courtesy
prowess and piety
honor and loyalty
warrior ethos put
lance and the sword
to the throats
of injustice
while minstrels
sang romance of
courtly love canons
polite with respect
for the women
they worshipped
oh for such days
were they real
did they ever exist
beyond sumptuous
lyrics of provenant
dewy eyed poets
The world is not a friend of grace . . .

This is wonderful, Paul. Such a medieval tone to it.

Never was such a time, but in the minds of those who wax poetic.

Hi Paul. I have written several poems on this period in history. True or false. You cannot beat Knights of the round table and the rescuing of a damsel in distress by a knight in amour upon his mighty steed! Thank you for liking my poem Hikers! Best Wishes. The Foureyed Poet.

Castles were made for “dewey eyed poets”. What a magnificent line! What a magnificent poem. I live in my heart in a moss-covered castle.

Beautiful re-creation of another time and ethos. I love your ending question that to me brings us back to “now.”

Whether only through the eyes of poets, such times and gallantry should exist. The stuff of legends and merits worthy of pursuit even when the castles often housed the rascals then and now.

I take that as words of wisdom from someone like you, whose homeland bristles with castles and is steeped in the lore of gallantry
