was there ever a golden age
a time of remarkable deeds
when motives and methods
of men were impeccable
worthy of singing immaculate
praise by the poets of progeny
was there ever a golden age
a time of remarkable deeds
or is memory merely a vessel
of hope a reformative hindsight
that polishes history shining
its possible light on the future
Their ignorance was their bliss; our is unconscionable . . .

Reminds me of the phrase often applied to this nation ‘This Once Great Nation’ completely overlooking we were the ones who globalized the slave trade; robbed Africa of its mineral wealth in return for our religion; were the ruination of the Indian sub-continent etc. etc. yet still claim ‘Great’ as our own. The finest thought provoking musings Paul.

Perhaps hindsight is not so much 20/20 as burnished by longing.

I gotta be one with the nay sayers. Man has been Man since our inception and no matter how much foundation and blush we add to our faces nothing we do is without blemish.

Memory fails us, but the word of God never will. “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” “All are unrighteous and have fallen short of the glory of God.”

It’s a strange thing to romanticize our past – there were things we did better, there were things we were doing worse – and all the things, better or worse, were like thousands of gears in motion to create worse problems and better solutions. It’s dizzying to think of it. The whole concept of past and present and future so hinging upon one another can bring one to madness if thought of too deeply for too long.
