bring me wine
deep with dark
heady fruit of
my fathers the
cellars of evening
producing this
homemade elixir
of ancestry jugs
set by feet of the
chairs at the tables
of family and
feasting no glass
left unfilled and
no heart left
unwarmed
bring me wine
of new vines
from old roots
of the piedmont
sweet ancient
abundance not
given to fancy
an everyday
blue collar red
for an immigrant
palate a body
that stands
a firm finish
delivering bold
taste of history

“…and the wine is bottled poetry.”
– Robert Louis Stevenson
Your verse brought back images of gallon jugs of barberone taken on fishing trips and sipped around campfires in the high mountain lakes of the Sierra Nevadas when I was in my 20s . . . Thanks!

As now (long since) USA domiciled British songwriter wrote of grand old wine cellars, ‘You can hear history breathing’…super poem for a wine lover like me!

I imagine you know your wines quite well – my tastes are less sophisticated

Not as well as Mr Stewart who once was able to point to the exact corner of the specific vineyard from which the grapes were pressed simply from a tasting!

Dear Paul, first you delight me with yet another amazing piece of poetry that ran like a ruby red merlot through my bones, then you got me to pucker up for a smooch with a quote from one of my favourite poets (I think many forget how wonderful the Treasure Island -fame endowed writer was at poetry). Loved this, Mr Lenzi. Loved it. Best wishes, sir 🙂

What a beautiful poem! I love a good glass of wine paired with an evening of conversation. You really captured the essence of what makes wine appealing 🙂
