“5 Elements of Nature” – Artist Unknown – from humanitythrougharts.org
moral theory
in vogue from
Aquinas to Hayek
articulates rights
inherent to humanity
anathema to planners
who would dictate
for progress who cling
to the fatal conceit
that heaven is earth
order emergent from
chaos spontaneous
neatly enabling
unfettered behavior
conducive to virtue
though not without
risk of the willful
release of inhumane
impulse the evil
as free as the good
hence society builds
up a framework
of laws from foundations
in common appeal to
the notion of justice
till accretions of time
hang the weight of more
laws upon liberty crushing
the personal freedoms
that nature endowed
individuals crassly
subsumed by a social
political construct
collective and top-heavy
easily ready to fall
natural order
de facto annulled
by a new de jure ethic
insensible to the reality
bad law is no law at all
Pared down, what are we but beasts with a soul; and that, warped by a great moral flaw from the start . . .

Oddly this is a poem I both agree and disagree with (what with me being an old left wing stalwart etc.) yet the morality you have painted so vividly is a thing I cannot argue with in part or at all. As ever, a deserved bravo moment and my respect

I’m reminded in your last line of Augustine’s “an unjust law is not a law.” Thanks!
