“Lady Justice” by Chad Ewalt
Why do we tolerate
your systemic insult to Rawls
who encrowned you,
empowered you,
first among virtues?
You pose finely gowned,
concealing a womb
inhospitable,
hostile, where
injustice now incubates.
Why use the might
of your double-edged sword
to slash at the very
innocent victims
imploring your redress?
When did your scales
become so unbalanced,
weighed heavy
with predisposition
for miscreants?
How did the gauze
slip loose from your eyes?
And what drew their
conscious assent
to cultural vagaries?
Our system of justice
is broken, unfair
perhaps past repair,
its moral authority
melting now circles the drain.
Justice as fairness! Love the ode to Rawls.

Great piece on a topic that is near and dear to my heart. Very nicely stated.

it should be dear to everyone – so much hangs in the balance

You are absolutely correct and I’d like to add that this should be the case regardless of ones political beliefs. So very nicely said Paul. Keep up the fight.

Justice is near and dear to my heart, in part because there is so little of it in the world. Love this poem. It sums up the state of affairs better and more eloquently than any tome of exposition could.

Very powerful, Paul–and always the language is beautiful. You know, I always wonder how some people can be so lackadaisical about justice–I tend to get all fired up, and the person I’m ranting too inevitably shrugs and says, “that’s the way it is”. Good grief!!

The deeper the injustice, the deeper the call to forgiveness. But we are also called to take up arms–using the sword of truth….
