like a toddler makes sense of the world
I put pieces of it in my mouth
random chunks of the cosmos
terrestrial tidbits a morsel of motion
taste texture and bite reveal truths
that refute the most trenchant
conventional wisdom
tongue tooth lip and cheek more reliably
sensible organs than eye ear and nose
less prone to be waylaid misled
by the spoor of unchallenged opinions
chew it up spit it out and move on
all the better equipped for the
self-made conclusions that mark
one’s authentic existence
Some great wording in this, Paul.

I’m knocked over–love what you did here, the whole way that a toddler moves and learns his/her too big world. Makes me think of the million times I protectively snatched some foreign object from a little one’s hand to mouth exploration, then kissed the silky head.

There is a whole philosophy within the middle metaphors herein – it blends well with the statement and observation made. Pretty perfect poem all round!

Great poem, Paul. I’ll forego the opportunity to get all Freudian 🙂

I agree. I read that his son (might have been his nephew) did more. He was the first to advise companies that psychology can be used to influence the public’s purchasing behavior.
