Thin Blue Line Candle

The terrible events in Dallas have rendered me unable to write poetry these last few days. I am filled with anger and despair.

My son is a decorated police officer, a police academy instructor, an EMT, a former member of the Civil Air Patrol, and a United States Navy veteran.

He is a man born to a noble ethic who enthusiastically swore a somber duty to serve and protect his fellow citizens – ALL of them – regardless of race or creed or character.

My entire family shares the grief suffered by him and by all of his brothers-and-sisters-in-arms around the country, as a result of the cowardly acts of those utterly despicable Dallas assassins.

We pray that he stays ever alert – keeps safe – and remains undeterred from his mission. We are exceedingly proud of him – and deeply grateful for the service of everyone in uniform – all of whom are increasingly in harm’s way.

The American social fabric continues to shred against the sharp edges of malicious factions. And now, more than ever in tatters, appears unmendable.

  1. People are too quick to count your mistakes than the sacrifices you’ve made for them. It’s amazing that your son is among the heroes. God bless those who serve others.

  5. I stand with you and your family to honor and protect our sworn officers of the law. Dallas was a disgusting, cowardly act on innocent lives. Truth is, everyday these types of disgusting acts are taking place by people who no longer respect our law enforcement and I do not apologize for saying that. A few bad apples does not give anyone the right to be so stupidly blind to what law enforcement has to encounter every single day and this is unacceptable.

  12. I too have a heavy heart. I feel as if I’m being torn apart and it’s gut wrenching! I am a law abiding citizen and respect police officers. Many are friends of mine. My prayers are with the fallen officers and their families. God help us all! Blessings and peace.

  16. It would seem crass to ‘like’ this. I am so sorry for what is happening there Paul. My grandson has just joined our Police Force, and it seems to me that all this hatred is tearing us apart. There are good and bad in all callings and in all races. We need to recognise that. Such violent acts will never bring an end to hatred. My heart goes out to all of those families.

  18. Paul – your son and all those who serve to protect us are in our prayers. I also pray for our nation to finally come together and unite looking for answers to all that divide us. We are in very dangerous times and I fear for all our sons daughters and grandchildren.

  22. My sister and her husband are retired NYPD. ON 9/11 I was paralyzed by not being able to reach her because the phones were down.
    You have my empathy, my friend.

  24. What is wrong with us and this world? Liked is the wrong word of course, and your presence was missed. I’m so sorry it was for yet such another awful use of guns in your country. It could easily have been anywhere. Prayers as always for this mess. As you say we are ALL in it, praying for freedom from being the oppressor – recognised or not – and freedom from being oppressed in so many ways. Please God show us the bit we need to do

  30. Paul, I too hope and pray that sons, such as your son, are safe and respected. As for your comment about there being no poetry. Happily, I beg to differ. For your last two sentences look very close to poetry to me.

  31. I had to go back and read again your last poem – I Want It Back…this post is such a raw one. The poem shows simmering.

    We want to hold those we love so close and safe. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking not to be able to do that.

  34. I read this when you posted it, then tucked it aside to reflect on it. God bless your son for putting others before himself. I spoke to two local officers yesterday, who solemnly wore a black patch across their shields. They just kept shaking their heads. I pray this violence comes to an end, and people realize we are all one color….human.
