“Plato’s Cave” by Carol Blakney
does the light disappear
once the flames
are abruptly extinguished
we creatures consigned
to live blindly
among good and evil
no longer equipped
to discern the distinctions
suspicion and fear
overtaking our
every encounter
compelling the
animal reflex
that has us retreat
to the refuge of caves
That is the question, a sad thing the answer. Superb muse Paul.

The only thing i can say is, lets run to the hills and retreat.

plenty of hills to choose from here where I am

of course, we remember the light…the flash, the warmth… perhaps the destruction? until the darkness becomes too solid to remember anything at all

These days, even caves may not offer adequate refuge.

One of these officers was an usher when I gave my sister away.
The papers actually posted the picture of the two officers’ bodies front page.

a horrendous story that recurs all too often

And for far too long and in too many places for no good reasons. Agreed.

Somehow we have to keep holding onto the brilliance within and never let the internal flame be put out! x Great poem and very poignant… xx

I don’t know – is it?

That’s how I would interpret it, but did you write it with that in mind?

for me, the joy of poetry is that its meaning is left to reader interpretation

That’s a fair view 🙂

I fear it doesn’t take much of a gust to blow out OUR flame . . .
