“Monte Cassino One Month After the Battle” by Feliks Kay-Krzewinski
four times blood of battle
gave siege to the hill
where blessings of Benedict
died inside bombs
holy bones of the stones
broke from watchtower
duties to shepherd the world
back to occupied Rome
peace rolling on tank treads
with oversized guns
A while back I read a book (a good book at that) on this subject. Unfortunately I cannot bring either the author or the title to mind as I write – yet in few lines you have, in effect, said all that book said!

What a vision of devastation! Moving poem. Odd how we FIGHT, yes we say we want peace.
