“Bride and Groom” by Sali Swalla
commitment is easy on the voice
hardly straining the tongue
barely trembling the lips
but once spoken
ineluctably alters the arc of a life
from the sound of small words
come corporeal large obligations
within beating flesh of the heart
no light fancy attends
the articulate promise
but oh what sheer joy is in store
for its diligent keeping of faith

No doubt about it: not only the marriage vow has become casually meaningless, but so have the simple promises we make to each other socially, politically, and in the marketplace . . . Broken promises leave a wake of broken relationships . . .

as an anachronistic old geezer married nearly 50 years, I guess I prefer to refuse the reality that divorces outnumber marriages

I plan to stay with Mrs M until my vow is fulfilled, but “sheer joy” doesn’t describe my overall experience. Moments, sure. It has to be enough, sometimes, that’s all we get. We’re at almost 25 years.
