“Lost Child” by mjr
pain is
pandemic
among young
defectively
loved mere
annoyances
coolly dismissed
ignored brushed
aside so much
chaff in the
smug adult
self-possessed
winds of failed
models each
child left to
navigate
fate’s harsh
vicissitudes
only to land
in some
mordant
dark place
where pain
grows into
anger matures
into hatred
inflicting
a rippling
broader
ranged pain
on us all
love the child
tend his needs
spare her pain
save the world
or else
stand as
accountable
owning the
consequence
but if you
can’t or you
won’t concede
guilt then at
least have the
courage to weep
for the loss
of a child
gone astray
for the wound
it creates in
the skin of
humanity
‘smug adult self possessed winds of failed models’ is great. I love the way this is written.

First reaction: Wow. For all our talk about everything “being for the children,” our society actually encourages us in the opposite direction. It tells parents to take time for themselves, that there’s nothing wrong with daycare, that parents can’t do it as well as a school run by a bureaucracy. But as a parent, is sacrificing your wants for 18 years or so REALLY that onerous? The early years of a child’s life are incredibly important and have everything to do with the rest of his or her life. A person needs to feel secure and loved and protected as a child to feel secure and loved as an adult.

I remember when mine were tykes and we both had to work, she and I alternated day and night shifts so one of us was always at home.

Oh wow, Paul. You must imagine how this piece touches me so deeply. “Pandemic” is such a scary word–but truly you’ve used it so accurately here–the daily news is overflowing with evidence of this catastrophe. I remember that I was fairly young when I made the decision I wouldn’t have children–in that one respect at least, I was quite mature; and though many judged me selfish, I rather think quite the opposite–if one is not equipped to be a better than average parent, and KNOWS it, it is the only responsible choice, in my view. And I’ve never regretted it.
