Sculpture by Janina Karczewska-Konieczna
the thorn and the nail
weapons primitive cruel
not enough to hang death
life must end in great pain
know the punishment
earned by its insolent birth
the lance and the sponge
deliver unkind mock relief
blood and water drawn
merciless staining faith’s
rough-hewn conjectures of
dogwood and cedar and pine
the veil and the shroud
timeless moments of stillness
one before and one after
the passion the end
the beginning the cup
of shed blood yet among us
the symbols the icons
these heraldic arms
weapons wielded against
force of darkness by
contradict everlast light
cast by man’s prince of peace
Stunning. This is a gift for contemplation. Thank you.

Dylan once said of A Hard’s Rain Gonna Fall that each line could have been a title of a song. This poem outguns the lyrical maestro.

thank you, my friend – but Dylan and Cohen are of a kind – in a class of their own

Saw a snap of Joni the other day. She is looking so very frail these days.

That water and blood: of sin the double cure. Relief in this life and holiness in that to come.

Symbols all so much deeper than we will ever be able to fathom . . . Yes, advent reflection on your verse is certainly called for!

It gives an added dimension to Advent to look past this season to the Cross. To me the shape of the sculpture resembles a Christmas angel.
