“Totem Walk” by Emily Carr
ancestral angels
administer secretly
animist sacraments
pointing out paths
of safe passage
through ritual
hewn iconography
boldly inscribes
old growth timber
staid canvas to render
stark creatures of
natural affinity
open-eyed spirit-guides
give of their tutelage
mystical descants
morality tales convey
wisdom that whispers
with linear memory
granting permission
for transit of time
across thresholds
of forest and future
permission who
cries to keep faith
with tradition
indigenous values
ennobling descendants
of kith kin and clan
tribal citizens worthy
of mother earth’s gifts
and possessed with the
mettle of warrior kings

“Gitwinkool Totem Poles” by Emily Carr

Stirs ancient memories… Very evocative. I can hear drumming coming from the forest.

I haven’t seen this artist’s paintings before; they are wonderful! I will be looking for her whole catalog. Thanks! And of course, your words add to the cause in our constant battle for cultural respect.

I can see in the drawings the totem poles make elegant guardians of tradition. I like especially your last nine lines.

Paul, you have to know that this is close to heart and home for me! Emily Carr; an extraordinary artist inspired by the indigenous, her works heavily exhibited here in British Columbia. There is a beautiful street in her name found in our beautiful capital city of Victoria. Several artists of note have found long-time residence along the length of Emily Carr Drive which spans the full length of an adjacent conservation area.
Totems have a strong presence throughout BC for their striking beauty, historical and spiritual significance and symbolic meaning. Wonderful to see this Paul. Thank you.
