“Suspension of Disbelief” by Rick Ladd
we fellowship of fools
asleep in blind faith
born of lazy beliefs
a pernicious affliction
predisposing we headless
we heedless enablers
abetting the surrogate
customs of turpitude
it takes work to believe
what minds will not grasp
conscientious commitment
legs rooted like treetrunks
in rich moral soils
those are the stalwarts
the clear title heirs
to creeds of the poets
a muscular reading
without preconceptions
discovers the secrets
of verses arcane
intellectual liturgies
mapping the methods
of minds who create
different paths to the truth

Profound, especially the last lines.

Hellish difficulty as an atheist, yet respect for your passion and compassion, undoubted. Words of true belief in support of goodness are not to be argued with.

I hadn’t meant it as a religious tract – but I can see how it reads that way – it was more of a complaint about the majority of people I know who disdain poetry and, by implication, poets – nonetheless, there are many “different paths to the truth” and I respect and admire all who strive to reach it – you are high on that list

Awesome. Truth indeed has a lot of paths. I like mine, and yours seems quite cool as well 🙂

Indeed, “it takes work to believe”–but where would we be without our poetic faith, my friend 🙂

I think it’s lack is why so many don’t like poetry

There is a mastery you have with these words. I am just a lowly student.

Amazing picture. It reminds me of cotton bolls attached to strings like kites. Wonderful line “legs rooted like tree trunks in rich moral soil”. This speaks to me of the rich ground of being that forms our underpinnings. Beautiful poetry.

A very nice take on Samuel Coleridge’s quote. I myself read a lot of Coleridge and try to take inspiration from him
