“Manganese Moon” by Ann Craven
underneath the round gaze
of an opioid moon
he suffers no sleep
kept apart from his dreams
of a painless old age
held in place
by the icy blue bonds
of a wintry despair
the cold light of the night
sears the air
burns his breath
every exhale
a whisper of prayer
for a clear minded morning
a sobering sunrise
of sorrowful thoughts
about living in snatches
between heavy dosages
body and mind numbing
intervals measuring
secants of clocks
who cut time into
broad languid wedges
too hot and too cold
of a nonce all at once
a biopsychology
thrown out of balance
insensible but for odd
now-and-then slivers
of miniscule moments
the treatment alas
comes as hard as the pain
dear the cost
sheer the terror
afflicting addicting
the living of life
underneath the round gaze
of an opioid moon
Absolutely love this

I just traveled down this road with you (while reading), and then thought … hmm, I had already been on that road (a year+ ago), and in many ways, still am.
While I, at times, wish my journey was a bit different, it’s nice to have the company. Be it you, or another, this so eloquently and precisely detailed a vivid image existing in life. Wonderful Paul, as always.

I appreciate that, kim – I, too, know first hand the suffering resulting from an unfortunate surgical outcome

So powerful, sad and beautiful all at the same time Paul. “living in snatches between heavy doses”… And the title; perfection! ❤

Sad, how the opioid crisis is negatively affecting so many lives!… and indifferent $ has a lot to do with it!

The picture is brilliant. I don’t want to say your images are beautiful because they cost such pain to come by. This is wonderful poetry however.

So powerful, Paul. “Afflicting, addicting” so perfect. I am so sorry you live with this, Paul. The doctors, not all of them but enough of them, are criminal. I would want to be in their shoes and have the sleepless nights they must have, not from an “opioid moon” but from a bad conscience.

as you well know, we all suffer, just in different ways – thank you most sincerely, ellen – you were one of my earliest followers and I cherish your support

That’s supposed to say I would NOT want to be in their shoes. Sorry.
