bars of a dull
psychic prison
a longing for life
as it ought to be
peaceful blue
unburdened sea
fresh air freely
affirming ambitions
for all those as yet
unmade memories
maybe tomorrow

pulsing like the blood of a star
our imperfect symmetries
map out an atlas of eggshells
broken in the fall from a sky rope
ambition tried climbing with
gloved moody hands till shocked
by a sound that concussed the
thin air lost their promising grip
the great noise came from mouths
of swarmed murderous microbes
unleashed by indifference they
screamed with malignance of hunger
and now in calamitous aftermath
pieces of eggshells lay rocking
with insult on curved broken backs
staring up at lost destiny even as
they became slowly devoured and
changed all the maps of the world

end of innocence
imprints its tragedy
under the skin
upon lips in extremis
failed man of great
worthless success
in mad grip of
insatiable wants
all alone in a crowd
of dead lovers
forsaken by friends
held forever in pity
he deeply despised
bitter irony
ever remembered
as less than
he thought of himself
crystal snowglobe
of dreams
fallen shattered
a boyhood sled
source of his
long absent joy
now consigned to
indifferent cold
plebian flames

monetary quotient
but a state of mind
born of achievement
not of largesse
contentment conferred
by a quality of life
worthy of aspiration
springboard for
healthy ambition
used by every one
of our wealthiest
nothing tears like
teeth of jealousy
foment against
the bourgeoisie
their very pejoration
destroys vital
sinews of free
society obstructs
crucial paths to
self-improvement
embargoes the
dream to succeed
panoramic aspirations
ride and headily rise upon
crass urban thermals nest
opportunistically tenanting
lofty architectural boughs
granite steel-rooted trees
grant glazed aeries to avarice
high rise hermetical tombs
mad with pale noble corpses
alive but not living afflicted
with character weak from
effete overweening ambition

stand place of honor amid
modern highrise ambitions

we punish real heroes
with silent ambivalence
casting instead our bright
diamonds and pearls into
settings on vulgar tin crowns
worn by heads of celebrity
spurious icons whose claims
upon fame are but vacuous
shallow reflections of values
that coarsen the culture
that cheapen the measure
of man by his meanest
ignoble ambitions

gray with hoarfrost
bearded rocks cast
a somnolent gaze
across rivers of time
tuck their chins into
worn granite collars
staving off winds of
December to coolly
consider the hours
that make up their
motionless eons spent
watching the random
parade of evolving
events tandem suns
whose revolving through
risings and settings
deride the millennial
stasis of stones so for
now they will quietly
contemplate sleep for
a season and conjure
perhaps during igneous
dreams some ingenious
new means to facilitate
motion when spring
warms and wakens
their faces if even their
movement comes
only one fractionate
inch at a time such is
hope as it lives down
and deep in the least
of inanimate things

he used to hang from the moon
stuff stars in his pockets
chase night from the face of the earth
hurl lightning bolts back to the cosmos
men clamored for his bold imprimatur
angels sat on his shoulders
together they gave righteous escort
protecting the driven and noble
he had powers electric invincible
wielded success like a truncheon
to instigate oomph in the abjectly timid
the dullards unblessed by ambition
then came cold reversal of fortune
disabling his ego with frissons of fear
felled by silence that amputates glory
prosthetic humility simply won’t fit
nothing sadder more tragic
than losing great pieces of self
nothing gladder more suiting
than hubris when brought to its knees
