“Return of the Sockeye” by David McEown
cedar planked salmon
grilled to a mapled herb crust
the cold river smiled
deeply enriched
by the death of Pompeii
ideally positioned
between sun and sea
propagation of nutrients
two thousand years
in the making
six feet of volcanic black soil
the plains of Neápolis
yielding their lush
Greco-Roman abundance
to modern Italian cuisine
plum tomatoes par excellence
reaching status of staple
in simmering sauces
of global gastronomy
here in America
Sundays with pasta
have never been better
delight born of danger
contentment conduced
from catastrophe
(75 word micro-story #6)
(Lunch)
The house smelled divine, like the intense rustic kitchens of the mezzogiorno. Broccoli rabe and garlic sautéed in olive oil, preparing to join fennel sausage and orrechiette al dente. With a crusty hunk of brick-baked bread and a glass of Chianti, a meal fit for peasants or kings.
She ignored his unshaven smile, his contrite caress of her bottom, knowing that before he would eat his next meal, she’d be gone. This time, for real.

Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte
