“Winter Drought” by Michael Ayrton
dry eyes to the skies
reservoirs itchy with weeds
rain a memory

“Dry Creek Near Canon” by Jan Oliver-Schultz
indigent streams trickle
paltry ribbons through dusty bones
of an unwashed season
“Wildfire 8” by Chad Rice
fires burn themselves
into the westerly mind
dead and dry
intellectual tinder
the product of seasons
bereft of a rational rain
such is proximate peril
for sun-drunken planning
of ego’s encroachment
on landscapes unsuited
to brazen self-interest
and reckless ecology
answering arrogant
insult with rage of
retributive flames
comes a drizzle in drought
eager hearts sniff the air
pungent promises slicken
brick walkways but not
enough rain for a surefooted
cleansing each raindrop
a bomblet exploding small
dust clouds that rise to the
nose printing ever more
frustrating memories onto
the mind filled already with
too many aspects of thirst
disappointment the natural
state formed by sieging sere
spiritual dry spells who
wither and desiccate dreams

Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte
