keen eyes consider
calculus of carom and kiss
more discreet than pool

“Delightful Tango” by Leonid Afremov
you lifted blue sapphires
through feminine eyes
cast with plush panorama
decked out in demure
white travertine thoughts
sculpted contours curved
into sharp masculine
angles and edges
and softened their
graystone ideas giving
rescue to doctrinaire
abstract dimensions
pedantic quadrivium
taught to medieval
young men leaving
much better modern
esthetics to grace
the steps traced in that
most ancient dance
by the fluid asymmetries
shaping the live beating
forms of the heart

sun descends through tall trees
a thousand glowing shafts
all at uniform angle of the hour
one mere glancing touch
by the circle of infinite time
guides these tangents of light
to my face to my eyes
all the warmth of the world
carried inside the promise
this day makes to no one but me
here alone in the hushed
summer church of my forest
composing my unspoken prayers
with the help of the light
that allows me to see
all that’s held in my heart
all the sins all the stories
the curves and the contours
that otherwise hide in the dark
of my chambered interior spaces
revealing the shape of my soul
King Solomon’s Molten Sea
elusive constant
irrational decimals
make transcendental
decipher of circles
ellipses and spheres
ancient Babylon
Egypt and Greece
fixed the ratio that
Solomon used for
his cast molten sea
holy lavabo serving
the priestly code
taught by leviticus
a function of unseen
perfections it still
figures prominent
set among theories of
modern mathematics
of science of logic
its sheer philosophical
mystery captivates
thinkers and artists
reminding us how
we can touch the
untouchable beauty
of hidden infinities
Image from sprott.physics.wisc.edu
immeasurable smallness of infinity
regressive mirrors of self
kaleidoscope glimpses
repeating in patterns
exquisite with beauty
iteration by formulae
manifest self-similar shapes
implausibly marked
with both limited area
and limitless perimeter
populates nearly
all aspects of nature
most cosmic to most subatomic
including the ultra-unseen
beyond both extremes
undergirds metaphysics
delineates dreamscapes
lays floor to ontology
rafters of ill-behaved chaos
and beams of complexity theory
they make for more elegant
sharper geometry
giving all science
more accurate measures
and tools for prediction
(I don’t normally work from prompts, but this one tickled my imagination.)

someone kind
someone gentle
whose dreams have no edges
whose skin bears no scars
no experience pained by
sharp corners of life
here lives someone who laughs
with big round belly sounds
sees the world with a settled
polite equanimity
wanting no special advantage
at peace with their
insular place in a circled society
feeling its comforting
sense of inclusion
of sharing
non-linear systems of
faith and philosophy
reverent with music of spheres
or perhaps the round door
simply leads down the
rabbit hole
granting uncertain asylum
to truly mad minds
in living our curve
as humans must do
asymmetrically
poetry functions
as tangent
touching some point
of emotion
along hypersensitive
bends of our soul
while prose
plays the secant
tying two disparate
thoughts into one
utile statement
of rational mind
“Perplexity” by Claudia Goodell
a riot of sameness
possessing illusions
at distance of difference
self-similar shapes
not of one two or three
but a fourth finely
fractioned dimension
right there just in front
of mathematical
Mandelbrot minds
but behind out of reach
of Euclidean eyes
here lies nature
evolved with
atomical symmetries
playful and modest
disporting in chaos
of quirks and complexities
finding itself more
predictable than it
intended revealed as
recursive of motion
and form adding
knowledge to laws
of quantum disorder
taken together
the concept of fractals
annuls intuition
allows mathematicians
and scientists insight
to see the more sharply
events that are probable
giving philosophers
poets and painters
new visions of
all that is possible

progress is fiction
every straight path round a sphere
makes a circle
joined at its start by its end
forward equal to backward
From my book Onionskin
journey the curve
between flashpoints
beginning and end
of the taut chord that cuts
a small segment
from the circle that scribes
all existence
put strain to the climb
with determined deliberate
exertions of youth
take no pause risk no
backslide fend off
the distractions of ease
attain the sweet apogee
apex incarnate of purpose
rewarding with heights
giving outlook for survey
of past and of future
take stock of the present
step careful along
the declension
here sit surprises
the likes of which
rattle and ruin such plans
as were made on the rise
ride the arc
eyes open and earnest
appreciate having been
graced with God’s
intimate gift live it well
and we all three
may meet at the end

Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte
