connected by keystrokes
kinetically energized concepts
ride beams of invisible light
bounced off stars
back to millions of eyes
watching words interweave
foreign stories and poems
that reveal common
struggles and dreams
electronic humanity
gratefully learning
the panoply range of
religion and race
language culture and place
distinguish the intellect
adding uniquely to
brain-wrinkle wisdom
enriching the mind of mankind

rare joy visits genius
socially reticent
angled to awkward
brow canted eccentric
profoundly engrossed
eyes freakishly focused
exquisitely clear
heart pumps silver truth
through scholarly veins
condensed certainties
dripping from brainpan
moisten the tongue
fingers permanent curled
around unseen answers
unaware how they
came to possession
who besides Mensa
could love such a creature
humility misfit
with unhumble traits
yet she does

did I mislearn this business of breathing
the inhale and exhale of gravity
nitrogen oxygen carbon exchanging
identities subject to rote biochemistry
something that ought not require a thought
yet I’m wont to admit that appropriate
roles of the nose and the mouth in respiring
confuse me and trade functions randomly
leaving me worried about my intelligence
mouthbreather being an epithet even the
stupid can well comprehend and yet here
am I catching myself sometimes swallowing
great gulps of air willy-nilly or dozing above
boring pages of poetry only to wake with a
start at the noise of my dissonant snores
though at least I can find peace and comfort
in knowing I have enough smarts to distinguish
between acts of smelling and tasting with
perhaps the exception of uneasy moments
when coughing and snorting with red-faced
chagrin I would find I had somehow ingested
my umpteenth cold beer through my nose

this constant contention
between left and right
takes a toll on the soul
each intelligent hemisphere
curbed and curtailed
by antagonist tendencies
forensics in combat with faith
language vying with music
calculus clashing with concepts
cold logic against intuition
well-reasoned analysis
fights well-imagined hypothesis
science a truculent foe
in the face of philosophy
thanks be to God for the poet
that singular lifeform
uniquely equipped
to collaborate truce
to bring synthesis from the division
and make of the mind
one astonishing whole
worth much more than its halves
to see with one eye
to hear with one ear
insults the endowment
of reasoned free will
ignores the philosophers
from Plato to Nozick
injures the birthright
heirloom of Cleisthenes
such half-informed citizens
founder and slump
in the wallowing
squalor of demagogues

nine miles seven lives
in a race from the face
of their earthly creation
those terrible plumes
uncertain of origins
stark pretty horror
desperate white fingers
scrabbling at sky
turning thrills into
shudders of realization
curl destiny downward
draw preludes to grief
the best minds who
admired vast visions
missed noticing
least deadly details
of intricate
cause and effect
such are flaws
that afflict and impinge
on our human intelligence
grown beyond scale
of small perils
possessing the powers
of terrible tragedy

sure genius
by uncommon autistic savants
serve to illustrate how much
pure genius
human intellect desperately wants
to unleash of potential
poor genius
starved by schools focused on the mundane
who will manage to damn well
cure genius
before it takes root in the brain
