rain scours intaglio sorrows
wind speaks nameless fears
lightning burns bereft hearts
thunder cracks open doom

(originally posted June 2013)
thunder stumbles in the dark
bumping about the night stage
lagging its lightning quick
flashes of sight
I enjoy the atmospheric comedy
until it hits home that my feet
are also too slow and clumsy
for my eyes
flashing seams jagged splits
rip the sky crack electrical
whips dagger-tipped solid
flames stab at mountaintops
jolting deep igneous brains
blackened tree corpses
futilely rooted bear vehement
evidence violence visits itself
unexplained without purpose
burning both bark and the pith
of ten-thousand year growth
with impunity leaving whole
civilized landscapes to wail
lamentations their lachrymal
faces upturned to their fears
of more helpless tomorrows

Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte
