is it simply misfortunate
“wrong place wrong time”
or something more sinister
raw feral
unevolved ethics
survival of fittest
without metaphysics
is cruelty an instinct
organic aggression
the piece of the human
he shares with the beast
are opposable thumbs then
the only
defining distinction
compassion and kindness
mere koans
of mutated spirit

fathom dimensions of silence
the in-between state
of our human expression
I know it is deep
so deep it contains
every sound ever made
every wail of existence
the birthing the living
the crying the dying
explosions and whispers
hummed utterances of the cosmos
distinctive and resonant voices
of God men and galaxies
sounds we lodge soundlessly
in among folds of our mind
preserved perfectly pure
authentic of tenor and tone
signal sounds
fain accompaniments
telltale halings of actions
decisions convictions emotions
these heralded signals unheard
nonetheless unmistakable
thoughts come to audible life
in this silence
ideas and beliefs
sing their cognitive psalms
this is vast quiet emptiness
filled with the knowable noise
and the measureless substance
of everything
worthy of owning

time a construct of mind
metaphysically shaped
as a purposeful arrow
so fleet in its flight
at the height of a life
it accelerates reaching
for tempo of starlight
enlisting the storm
in that sky above skies
where all pieces of
darkness and light
all beginnings and ends
swirl together and swarm
in apparently putative
chaos of cosmos
tomorrows and yesterdays
blended in hurtling
mythic menageries
motions disturbed
here and there
by conspicuous stillness
fixed cold constellations
that light up the brain
to appreciate
just how to measure
the changing beliefs
of prehistory
even amidst the
galactic commotions
of raging existence

human taxonomy
transcends the physical
bi-pedal brain size
opposable thumbs
and posture erect
are mere pretexts
to unlink the chain
metaphysics marks
deeper distinctions
of man among mammals
even for those
torn and troubled
by notions of soul
simply recognize
unique capacities
men have for
laughter and mercy
that leaves open however
the question of
whether a man
who can’t laugh
or forgive
is anything more
than a beast

proving every event
proceeds from necessity
scoffing free will
with determinist zeal
all that is real
in its striving to be
is perfection
that gone unperceived

regressive mirrors of self
kaleidoscope glimpses
repeating in patterns
exquisite with beauty
iteration by formulae
manifest self-similar shapes
implausibly marked
with both limited area
and limitless perimeter
populates nearly
all aspects of nature
most cosmic to most subatomic
including the ultra-unseen
beyond both extremes
undergirds metaphysics
delineates dreamscapes
lays floor to ontology
rafters of ill-behaved chaos
and beams of complexity theory
they make for more elegant
sharper geometry
giving all science
more accurate measures
and tools for prediction

vision is not of the eyes
it assembles itself in the mind
where glaucoma can’t reach it
an unseen but seeable imagery
poets and thinkers rely on
a figurative comprehension
imaginative within realm
of the possible given belief
that all concepts are possible
sight is not insight for insight
requires understanding
beyond what mere percepts
present incompletely to senses
in habit of being misled by
the physical features defining
the world while neglecting the
rich metaphysics the aura
philosophers recognize glowing
invisibly splendid in all that exists
or might ever yet come to exist

floating outside and above oneself
watching each movement and motive
a doppelgang presence untethered
objective yet intimate inside-out
shadows of mind melt in sunlight
revealing the shape of each internal
conflict each unconscious choice
love or hate fight or flight to belong
or be gone to believe or deny to
embrace or rebuff trust or doubt
easy questions with difficult answers
here the hovering self draws a bead
from these rarefied clarified heights
maps the mindless mechanics the
arcane emotional math of ambivalent
passions this out-of-self self takes
its airborne perspective informing
identity free from terrestrial taints
not a trace of pedestrian odors
survive in these clean breezy precincts
aeolian free yet invested in how
the man walking below makes his way
through the muck and the mire of life
this affinitve being this airy reflection
man’s own metaphysical touchstone
his de facto ethereal archetype angel
