“Rhetoric” by Jeram Patel
(Originally posted June 2013)
skin-deep principles
slither through
rhetoric underbrush
hoping to cross
the electoral forest
before they moult
leaving evident shapes
where any
wandering citizen
might find and
examine them

“Mask of Personal Happiness” by Gil Bruvel
flesh and blood mask
affixed by the mind onto
insecure tendons of self
simultaneous intentions
present and conceal
impress and divert
built inanely from notions
of archetypes conforming
to others’ deceptions
I knew several intimately
they all were once worn
by a much younger me
theatrical wounds
histrionic agonies
curdle sympathy
earn you scorn as pariah
best to suffer in silence
you see we bear real
affliction and injury
with no wont to stage
low inducements to pity
preferring our self-respect

Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte
