hardly straining the tongue
barely trembling the lips
but once spoken
ineluctably alters the arc of a life
from the sound of small words
come corporeal large obligations
within beating flesh of the heart
no light fancy attends
the articulate promise
but oh what sheer joy is in store
for its diligent keeping of faith

cold graveyard bench through the lonely
repeating of weathering seasons grief
keeps its own counsel keening in silence
surviving on memories sifting the air
for those traces of love promised never
to perish an oath against dying in trust to
the living if only the heart will believe

and shadow speech
secret apparatus in
ploy of a priesthood
long beards longer
robes cloak agendas
pointed words serve
designs of distraction
from furtive deft
hands spinning issues
positions opponents
achieving odd profiles
that gull jaded eyes
and pander to fear
magic staffs poke
dull minds in their
sweet spot of envy
with empty impossible
promises villains
transform into heroes
astride their white
chargers with hats
full of stars and moons
ready to shine in the
stale dusty darkness of
little used voting booths
truth somewhere left
on the floor nothing
more than detritus
of damaged democracy
litter unswept and
unnoticed beneath
shuffling sandals
