Image from Richa Art Club
placid glimmerglass sheen
stretched canvas of forest and sky
but I can’t find my youth
in the diurnal scud of the clouds
flying faster and further
from halcyon days in the sun
cooled by frolicsome leaps
with my dog from the dock
diving into the depths of my future
now I sit here in invalid’s pose
on the bench that I built with
my pals sixty summers ago
propped and pained by the
memories clenched in my hands
with a flick of my least impaired
arthritic wrist I give sail to a
perfectly triple-skipped stone
breaking into a smile in excelsis
From my book Pieces of Wine
“End of Summer” by Pol Ledent
spent of her warmth
summer sighs in the waning
gives autumn a nod
“Pumpkin Patch” by Heidi Malott
scent of first woodsmoke
pumpkins plumping on the vine
summer’s soft retreat
“Summer on the Farm” by Robin Moline
blue skies yellow sun
curled landscapes ingeniously
vivid with colors
of rural prosperity
warmed by Augustus himself
“Gentle Breeze” by Eloise Schneider
little green hands
speaking gestures of summer
breezy eloquence
“Heat Wave II” by Jane Robinson
scorched by the devil
faces melt beneath their beards
strangers unto God

Time to be lazy, shriven of duty
Loll in a rowboat out on a lake
Head at rest on the transom
Hand over the side
Fingering ripples. Breathe in the fruity
Fragrance perfumers never well fake
Sky serene blue and handsome
Clouds hover and glide
Such dog days Twain gave to Sawyer and Finn
Cast them abroad in pure innocent
Sun filled adventures of boys
Life lay at bare feet
Gentle genius the hand whose pen made spin
Pleasant yarns so soon since cannon rent
Union with uncivil noise
Dead lay in each street
Summer seems not the right time for despair
It’s too lovely and too warm to cry
Best not remember too much
Just let drift the oar
Summer should not hear the soldier in prayer
It’s too lovely and too warm to die
Gun barrels burn to the touch
In season of war

today we tilt
staring straight into
the year’s highmost
face of the sun
abolishing night
in the arctics
granting to cancer and middles
our longest of days
for worshipping light
genuflecting our eyes
before mystical splendors
of lingering earthly spectacles
then pausing
to draw in a
deep greening breath
we’ll look to the heavens
inviting a skyway for
advent of glorious
perigee moon

drinking summer
from leafcups
afternoon cocktails
of birdsong and butterflies
garnished with
shaded impatiens
stirred by a low
slender moon

Poetry Puttering by Pax & Company
Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte
