once more unto the breach
headlong into the cruel
gnashing teeth of calamity
knowing the intimate feel of real fear
that no coward
has ever once touched
armed with steely resolve
to protect and defend
they bend back the instinct
for self-preservation
re-aiming it outward
reshaping it into the noblest of tools
for the rescue of victims
as peril surrounds them
with bullets or flames
with temblors or floods
they give succor to innocents
saving with even but one hapless soul
all the essence
of fellow humanity
Very nicely said my friend! beautiful post!

Brilliant words as always, we saw everything here as it happened and all services. We experienced the Bali bombings. They were devastating and heart wrenching. I feel for everyone involved and everyone in the services

Even without the image – in fact this doesn’t need said image – the poem paints its own powerful, disturbing, brave-heart message with words that honour. No second guessing what it is about.

I’m struck today by the last 3 lines, that the essence of humanity might exist, be worth saving, in even one soul. Majestic.
