why do birds have eyes
for creatures
no others can see
what have they done
to earn private feast
biologically blessed
exalted by mute evolution
with powers to
measure and judge
every nuance
of movement
within seas of motion
like wavering acres
of tall flowing grass
or lamentable thoughts
that escape
down the cheeks
of a guilt-shaken man
(originally posted November 2013)
Sharp claws,
Sharper tongue,
What a beauty.

Nailed it with panache. The eyes – just yesterday evening (it was still light) Shirley placed the smallest scrap of meat out in the garden for a friendly urban fox to sniff out later. Then from nowhere a gull appeared – shortly followed by many others – and nicked it. It is all in the eyes!
