we punish real heroes
with silent ambivalence
casting instead our bright
diamonds and pearls into
settings on vulgar tin crowns
worn by heads of celebrity
spurious icons whose claims
upon fame are but vacuous
shallow reflections of values
that coarsen the culture
that cheapen the measure
of man by his meanest
ignoble ambitions
Intricate imagery. Does “silent ambivalence” suggest the brief pause we use to honour heroes? A moment that is often practiced with complacency… This sets up a dramatic contrast within the piece. I enjoyed reading.

Well-spoken truth. My cynical side comes out when I hear that a celeb has made some magnanimous gesture–probably isn’t fair, smacks of “judgment”, but I usually think they’re doing it to get a tax write-off. Real heroes don’t advertise, and usually just want to be left alone; celebs complain that they want privacy–and then they do ridiculous things to get back in the spotlight, news. Can you tell that my pain has me irritable today?

Spectacular and apropos, especially on this day to honor true heroes. Similar in sentiment to
only more positive in tone. Please forgive the apparent tooting of my own horn- your post struck a resonant chord.

The cult of celebrity diminishes much in culture and aspirations. I can’t tell you how many children want to ‘be famous’ as their contribution to society.
